OSELVAR  VERKSTED

A  TRADITIONAL
WOODEN  BOAT   WORKSHOP

In the centre of the small town
OS,  something is keeping the tradition alive
the Oselvar Workshop.
Since the summer of 97 this wooden boat workshop is
working full time and it is the
main attraction in this
Norwegian West Coast town.

THE  OSELVAR

A boat all people had in the West Coast.

Oselvar is a traditional small
boat from this area of Norway.
In the old times every one had usually more than one in
different sizes. The size of the boat depends in the number of rows it has and this gives the
boat a special name.
In this area of fjords surround
by water every where, all
people needed a boat.
A boat for going from one
place to another, a boat for transporting  people and gods
a boat for home fishing.
But the Oselvar was also the
main boat of the fishermen
and it was use both for in
fjord fishing and sea fishing.
The Oselvar is a strong but
light and fast boat, good for rowing
and good for sailing,  therefor
it was used by all.
It is built in the ”klinke”
technique as all the boats
coming from the viking way of building boats.

THE  WORKSHOP

The traditional work
making the tradition  alive !

Harald Daland is the old master
of the Oselvar building. He left
his old workshop and now together with more three
people they work full time for
this local municipality  project.
During two days a week  they
have the workshop open to
visitors, anyhow one can
always look in !
Some school pupils come in the afternoon to learn this building technique .   Many people and schools come to see their work
but they can’t be all the time
talking with people because
they have much to do.
From day to day more people
wants to have an Oselvar .
Because of its particularities
it is a good boat both for
pleasure using and sailing
races.
Some are going for  exhibitions
and museums.
This workshop his a great
cultural project supported by
the municipality of OS .
By the way does Oselvar come
from OS....
or OS come from Oselvar ?
